Dance Wall is an immersive video mapping installation that Fabbrica Europa has produced for the PARC Performing Arts Research Centre in Florence, drawing from the Luca Ballini / Videolab archive. From 5 September to 4 October it hosts a selection of videos showing over 100 artists and companies who have presented their creations at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence, from 1994 to present, as part of the Fabbrica Europa Festival.

Dance Wall is the result of the stratification and rhythmic relation of visual material, elaborated by a software that has been programmed specifically for this purpose. In real time, the installation taps the visual content of Fabbrica Europa’s archive. It then re-projects images while decomposing and re-assembling them, with the aim of creating consonances, new interactions and rhythms.

The programming is based on two main principles: time and geometry. The temporal one aims to expand time to analyse it as a trace that movements leave in the space. Meanwhile, the geometrical parameters reveal essential volumes and compositive lines.
Space is another fundamental factor that leads the programming. Indeed, the installation is the result of a video mapping of the room: a study on the volumes and empty parts of the hall determines the rhythmic and modular articulation of the contents.

Dance Wall is a game in which the performative material blends with the automatism of the machine. The stage moves to the walls of the room and interacts with the visual language, following generative logics, in a constant yet ever-changing dialogue.

From an idea of Maurizia Settembri, Dance Wall is a continuous work in progress. It is designed and curated by visual designer Tommaso Arosio with the collaboration of Andrés Morte Téres. The installation draws on visual material that was largely curated and collected by Luca Ballini. The amount of content can grow and the programming in real time can increase the possibilities in which the images can be implemented. In this respect, Dance Wall aims to open up new ways through which the Fabbrica Europa’s archive can be presented.

During the Festival, Dance Wall hosts a programme dedicated to the video projection of Italian and international dance.
