It’s the first time that Ronconi faces the staging of the Six characters and he gives, as usual, an innovative and amazing interpretation of the play.
The director wants to set the text free from the gradual encrusting grown in more than 80 years, due to the sequence of critical analyses and stagings. In a conversation with Anna Bandettini, he said: «I’ve got a feeling that, while in the ’50s and ’60s it was obvious that the background context of a play was that of a theatre with the capocomico, the stage whisperer, a theatre with the need of verisimilitude, today that context no longer exists. This sets the comedy free from encumberments and mannerisms which had been overgrowing: I’m thinking of both that “theatre in the theatre” game which is as old as the hills, and all that typically Pirandellian menage. I’m not saying that this play is old-fashioned. In fact, I wonder how a one-century-old play can still work. However, it’s obvious that its success is not due to the metaphor of theatre in the theatre: since virtual reality became a part of our lives, the contrast between reality and imagination has lost its meaning ».
The concept of scenic space, without a stage, underlines how «those characters live in the mind of their creator and, thus, can’t be tangible at all».
A new view of the characters is then for Ronconi the right occasion to make this group of young actors understand an essential element for performing: «they shouldn’t think about playing their roles. They should ‘act’, which means ‘to be’ in someone else’s mind».
In cerca d’autore. Studio sui “Sei personaggi” is the final result of a three-year-project which started with the cooperation between Centro Teatrale Santacristina and the National Academy of Dramatic Arts “Silvio d’Amico”.
The educational and creative path which leads to the staging of this performance takes place in the school of Centro Teatrale Santacristina where, since August 2010, for three summer cycles of courses held by Luca Ronconi, led the students graduated from the acting course of the academy through the analysis of the text written by Pirandello.
