Tremens_Ride is a part of Tremens, an immersive experience at the intersection of theatre and embodied virtual reality.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s misanthrope Timon of Athens, the work explores the tension between human connection and withdrawal in a world where people risk being reduced to data points.
In Tremens_Ride the immersants are taken through fluid, interactive architectures and shifting spatial constellations, with avatars and digital illusions that blur the line between reality and virtuality.
By drawing parallels between Timon and Mark Zuckerberg, Tremens reflects on the promises and perils of virtual worlds and what it truly means to be human in an increasingly mediated landscape.
Eric Joris (Antwerp, 1955), is a transdisciplinary artist and researcher. He pioneered immersive VR-media with fully embodied immersive performances on from 2003 using new types of VR, fully anchored in the physical body. CREW has been the artistic vehicle for his experiments. His live performances C.A.P.E., W_Headswap, Terra Nova, Eux, Hands-on Hamlet, Hamlet’s Lunacy, Delirious Departures, Tremens have been shown at major international festivals and events including Festival d’Avignon, Steirisches Herbst Graz, Fabbrica Europa, World expo Shangai, Siggraph L.A., Festival of the Future Munich and are subject of many academic papers and articles.
Isjtar Vandebroeck works as a media artist, electronic music composer and performer. A first-generation native digital artist, he uses the computer as chisel, stone and looking glass. His work is transdisciplinary, as such he excels in collaborations and art-science-technology crossovers. Notable collectives were OKNO, Code31, Society of Algorithm and ATK! Over the years his work has shifted from the sonic to the visual. At CREW he refined his skillset to include bleeding edge forms of XR.

This project was created with results of the EU project Max-R and our EXP Framework: (supported by EMILXR ), which was developed during our last research project to enhance the various aspects of the performer’s tools.
