All the dirt of the 90s with the technology of the 70s
Twenty-five years after its first appearance, Epica Etica Etnica Pathos brings back to the public the 1990 disc, never performed live, gathering together the four historical members Gianni Maroccolo, Massimo Zamboni, Francesco Magnelli and Giorgio Canali, the two female voices Ginevra Di Marco and Angela Baraldi, and some of the most interesting musicians and singers of the following generations such as Lo Stato Sociale, Appino, Brunori Sas, Max Collini and Francesco Di Bella.
In order to support and stimulate the memory of contemporary reality, the Epica Etica Etnica Pathos project arises from the need to find a territory for encounters among musicians, creating where possible the passage of experiences and evidence as a tool for sharing and collective work. If it is true that with new technologies making music is becoming more and more frequently individual work, then creating laboratory events for exchange and action together can enhance the creative, productive and social aspects of a festival. The identification of this territory in a disc such as Epica Etica Etnica Pathos has come from setting a specific period, the passage between the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the socio-political scenario of the 90s, through a social attitude of making music that is the aspect to be reactivated in some way.
The Story of the disc
Epica Etica Etnica Pathos is the fourth album of the Italian punk rock group CCCP Fedeli alla linea, published in 1990 by Virgin Records. Appearing as a double, it was the last disc of the group which disbanded shortly afterwards.
The disc was recorded from April to June 1990, almost wholly as a live recording at Villa Pirondini, an abandoned eighteenth-century farmhouse in the countryside of Reggia Emilia, near Rio Saliceto. The natural echo of daily space was used rather than the glossy uniformity of a modern recording studio. Furthermore, the recording and sound mixing were done analogically, as is highlighted in the notes on the cover: «All the dirt of the 90s and the technology of the 70s».
With the artistic production of Gianni Maroccolo, the disc is divided into 4 parts, each one dealing with one of the themes expressed in the title: “Epic”, “Ethical”, “Ethnic” and “Pathos”. All the photos in the album are by Luigi Ghirri: the cover, showing the villa’s chapel adapted as a sound mixing studio for the disc, and the four photos accompanying the four themes/faces in which the disc is divided.
