This work is a research on masculinity:
what is masculinity to me? how can I ‘release’ it in order not just to renounce it? may I have an intimate, non-normative contact with my being male? is my being male really something I share with others? can masculinity be a ‘courtyard’ or a field of experiences rather than a category to belong to?

This work is an attempt to repel ghosts, disarm fears, loosen borders, Turn the earth into a sky that, precisely like the sky, does not confuse geography with genealogy, altitude with authority.

This work is also an attempt to write a letter to the Father, the one we have known, even if he’s been missing, the one to whom we have all been subjected, we as our fathers and their fathers too.

This work is a solo, although we are two. It’s a solo with an intruder. I am the intruder.

This work is a way to say goodbye and, in this sense, it starts from an ending.

This work is a labour.

– Gennaro Lauro

Gennaro Andrea Lauro was born in England and grew up in Italy where, after studying Philosophy and Eastern Languages, has approached dance and theatre and worked, among the others, with Romeo Castellucci, Cindy Van Acker, Giorgio Rossi, Cie Meta, Cie Inkörper, Circo El Grito e Oona Doherty. Since 2018 he has created his own pieces.
Sarajevo – la strage dell’uomo tranquillo, his first creation, was selected as finalist of the Premio Equilibrio 2018, for the showcase Anticorpi XL 2018 and among the ’40 Winks’ of Aerowaves 2019. His second piece, Mondo, has been selected for the showcase Anticorpi XL 2020 and among the ’40 Winks’ of Aerowaves 2021. It has been project resident at KommTanz/Cie Abbondanza-Bertoni and FabricAltra in Schio (Italy). His third creation, ZugZwang, in collaboration with his sister Elisabetta Lauro, premiered in April 2023.
His new creation, To Repel Ghosts / Lettera al Padre, will have its national premiere at Fabbrica Europa 2025.
