In a nightgown. Immaculate, splashing white. In the midst of a thick darkness, that of the night, place of fantasies, darkness, dreams, letting go.
It is a body in full pulsation, an attempt at revolt, at rebellion. An indestructible and indomitable desire for freedom. That of escaping the shackles, of putting an end to the injunctions, of cracking the seams of conditioning, of boiling down the assignments.
On a bare stage, lectures are raining. There is the one who receives them, seems vulnerable, and the one that nothing stops, insolent, whose body like a caged lion tries to free itself.
On a crescendo of electro basses, a body that shouts loud and clear that it must exult at all costs.
Leïla Ka began her journey as a dance artist with urban dances which she quickly crossed with other influences. Having performed in Maguy Marin’s May B, she draws from this experience a danced theatricality that she integrates into her choreographic research. She started choreographing in 2018 when she premiered her first solo, Pode Ser, awarded five times internationally and performed more than 140 times since its creation. She has also created a duet You’re the one we love (2020) and a second solo piece Se faire la belle – To cut loose (2022). Leïla is now an associate artist at CENTQUATRE-PARIS, at La Garance – scène nationale de Cavaillon, and at Espace 1789. In 2022, she received the Choreographic Revelation Award from the Syndicats de la critique with Se faire la belle and with Bouffées, a short piece for five dancers, she won the first prize at the international competition Danse Élargie of Théâtre de la Ville de Paris. She is currently working on a longer version of Bouffées, which will be her first full length piece and will be premiered in November 2023, called Maldonne.
