São Paulo Underground is among the latest creations of Chicago cornettist and electronic Rob Mazurek, one of the most active musician in the contemporary new jazz scene.
After the long series of groups created under the label Chicago Underground, Duo, Trio, Quartet etc., the new line-up marks the collaboration of Mazurek with some of the most creative soloists of the São Paulo scene.
The result is a powerful blend of echoes of electric Miles Davis and samba of the ’40s, tight improvisations and “à la Tortoise” sounds, melancholic ballads and sudden noise explosions.
Two CDs, “Sauna: Um, Dois, Três” (2006) and “The Principle of Intrusive Relationships” (2008) illustrate the extraordinary sound range of the group, the same that animates their overwhelming concerts.
