Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards
Focused Research Team in Art as Vehicle
The Living Room – directed by Thomas Richards – develops as a constant research on the potentialities of the actor’s craft and on the way in which they can be enriched by the reality of our daily interpersonal relations. The Living Room takes us home, to a place in which we welcome another. The spectator is invited to a small domestic banquet where he can shed his anonymity, becoming a guest. During this encounter a performative event unfolds, structured and precise, a living stream of actions based on work with songs of tradition, as well as texts that explore what it takes to awaken faced to oneself, faced to another, and the world.
The Workcenter was born at the initiative of Jerzy Grotowski and Centro per la Sperimentazione e la Ricerca Teatrale di Pontedera. From his arrival in Italy in 1986, Grotowski has developed at the Workcenter a line of “research on Performing Arts,” known as Art as vehicle. Within this investigation, he worked very closely with Thomas Richards, and transmitted to him the fruit of his lifetime research, what Grotowski called “the inner aspect of the work.” Since Grotowski’s passing, the Workcenter has steadily intensified its international activities and today collaborates with institutions from all over the world. Currently there are twenty actors at the Workcenter who come from the United States, France, Brazil, Canada, Poland, Belgium, Argentina and Italy. The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards is active within the structure of Fondazione Teatro della Toscana.
