In 2014 Irene Russolillo was awarded the Best Performer Equilibrio Prize in Rome. The young choreographer and performer, beyond her work as an interpeter, has been working since few years on her own works; through this Prize she was given the chance to produce a new solo to be directed by another choreographer of her choice. Lisi Estaras, Belgium-based Argentinian artist, long-time collaborator of Alain Platel’s major works and past member of Les Ballets C de La B choreographers, decided to create with and for her The speech.
Based on a recent solo by Estaras, that premiered last October in Belgium, The speech is a new attempt in trying to fill up our personal “empty spaces”. Using our physical and emotional memories can help us to bring them once more close to us. It allows us to get carried away, to manipulate our own story, somehow, similar to many others.
A chaotic attempt to talk to the audience and even better, make the audience read
our thoughts and language ,made up of extreme gestures. An invitation that reveals something intimate.
A desperate and beautiful call or maybe just an excuse to show the very raw of what we are made of.
Dancer, performer-actress and choreographer, Irene Russolillo has studied ballet, contemporary dance, physical theatre and contact improvisation. Since 2007 she has worked as a dancer with Micha Van Hoecke, Roberto Castello, Mario Piazza, Daniela Capacci, Harry Albert, Claudio Bernardo, Francesca La Cava, Abbondanza – Bertoni, Erdem Gunduz. As a choreographer, she is part of ALDES, an association of artists and cultural operators, based in Tuscany and directed by Roberto Castello.
She is co-author of Antipasto (finalist Nuove Sensibilità 2010 – Naples and winner Young Station 3 – Prato) and author of Ebollizione (finalist GD’A Puglia 2012 competition for Young choreographers), Strascichi (winner Premio Outlet 2014) and A loan, co-produced by festivals Inequilibrio/Castiglioncello and Oriente Occidente/Rovereto. In 2014 she has been awarded the Best Performer Prize Equilibrio Roma and Best Performer Prize in 19Masdanza International Contemporary Dance Festival of Canary Islands. In 2015, together with Davide Calvaresi, she has been awarded Premio Prospettiva Danza in Padua, with the work Map. In September 2016 she will be artist in residence at the Italian Cultural Institute of Paris, within the project “Le promesse dell’arte” that promotes young Italian artists in France.
Lisi Estaras was born in Cordoba (Argentina), where she began her dance studies that continued thereafter in Jerusalem at the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance. She later worked with Batsheva Ensemble of Tel Aviv, directed by Ohad Naharin. Since1997 she has worked for les ballets C de la B. As a dancer she has taken part in Iets op Bach, Wolf, VSPRS, pitié!, C(H)ŒURS and tauberbach by Alain Platel and in Tempus Fugit by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Over the years she has also made personal projects like Bartime (Campo, Ghent), Cocina Erotica and No Wonder with Constanza Macras (Schaubühne, Berlin). With les ballets C de la B she has created Patchagonia, Bolero, The Gaza Monologues, primero-erscht and Dans Dans, a co-production of les ballets C de la B ang het Kip (Ghent), and A distancia. She recently created the choreographies of Hiob for Sandra Strunz (Theater Bonn), Das Brennende Haus, directed by Emilio Garcia Wehbi and Maricel Alvarez (Stadt Theater Bern) and The Hamilton complex, directed by Lies Pauwels (Het Paleis, Antwerp). In 2015, with Ayelen Parolin, she created The esclava, a solo where she’s also interpreter. Her latest creation is Monkey Mind, a piece for disabled and non-disabled dancers, produced by Platform K and les ballets C de la B, which debuted in last February.
