Perle sparse / Perle fanné par tous is an installation about the theme of travel and the feeling of coming back to one’s country of origin. A journey from Mauritius to Europe and from Europe to Mauritius. In this installation the viewer will find a multimedia and imaginary geographical map, a narrative, and sensorial journey between memories trough two video screenings and thoughts about what we carry with us when we are migrating. In this work the fundamental element is water, which is associated to the movement of the diaspora.

Vashish Soobah was born in Catania in 1994 to Mauritian parents. In his country of origin he has a fixed image in his memory: a huge field of sugar cane that opens up in front of his grandmother’s house. The plantations recall the violent context about slavery that imprisoned Mauritius for centuries, but also a glue that binds the diaspora: séga music.

Vashish Soobah (1994) is a visual artist, filmmaker and documentary filmmaker born in Sicily to Mauritian parents who grew up in Brianza. He graduated in media design and multmedia arts at Naba in 2018 and later earned a master’s degree in Moving image & artist’s film at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2019.
In the construction of his works he always starts from his condition of in-between, being in the middle between two cultures, the Italian and the Mauritian. His practice focuses on the concept of memory and migration, the meaning of home and identity, spirituality and issues related to the Mauritian diaspora through biographical and personal narratives. Another fundamental element that he retraces in his practice is to rework the images and videos that come from the family archive.
His works were exhibited at MA*GA in Gallarate, Almanac Inn in Turin, Marsell in Milan, Oberdan space in Milan and published by magazines such as “EX NUNC”, “i-d VICE”, “Il POST” and “Perimetro”. On the occasion of the 28th edition FESCAAAL in 2017 presented the documentary “Nanì” that traces the history of his family through the eyes of his grandmother, starting from a personal research and then expanding to the entire Mauritian cultural heritage.
