Psychologists call “Cocktail Party Effect” the extraordinary human ability of selecting and listening to a single voice in the midst of a multitude, ignoring any other information from the surrounding environment.
There are though certain meanings or elements which seem to represent an except ion to this phenomenon and to enjoy a certain easiness in trespassing the filter of selective attention, even when they do not belong to the auditory stimulus consciously selected by the listener.
This happens, for example, when we hear an unknown voice pronounce our first name at a party, while we are conversing with somebody else.
This interesting psychological effect becomes here a pretext to develop a choreographic and environmental research focusing on the topic of interference and humming.
Cocktail Party Effect intends to enclose the spectator inside a total performative landscape, rich in well-modulated discordant stimulations, to invite to a reflection on the development of new abilities of selection and attention required by the technological, and to suggest a new challenge
to abandon, based on the conviction that we already are beings in constant and forced mutation and that our look is already learning to operate its choices inside the swirling stream we are immersed in.
