PEOPLE USED TO DIE
People used to die is the reworking of Avant les gens mouraient by the French collective (LA)HORDE, entrusted to Equilibrio Dinamico Dance Company. Fifteen dancers reinterpret the languages of Hardjump, Hakken, and Jumpstyle, an underground dance form characterized by high-intensity dynamics, rapid jumps, rhythmic movements, and almost acrobatic figures. The stage erupts with collective street dance interventions and freestyle solos set to music that becomes an acoustic engine, capable of generating the composition and guiding the performers’ actions.
Jumpstyle is a popular movement that emerged in the 2000s, evolving from Hardstyle, although some purists trace its origins back to the 1980s.
Beyond referring to a genre of electronic music rooted primarily in Europe, particularly in Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, the term also denotes a dance style that gained popularity in Northern Europe in the late 1990s, notably through the influence of dancer Patrick Jumpen and music artists such as Zware Jongens, Chicago Zone, DJ Coone, Ronald-V, and E-Max, all of whom played an important role in the development and dissemination of the style and remain influential figures within the scene today.
MAHALAGA LANDSCAPES
MAHALAGA Landscapes is a performance originally created in Luxembourg by choreographer Jill Crovisier on the occasion of Esch-sur-Alzette European Capital of Culture 2022.
The work draws inspiration from the natural reserve and industrial heritage of the choreographer’s hometown in the south of the country.
On stage, the performers move through a dense, mist-filled lightscape, accompanied by sounds of nature and industrial noise. This intimate and contemplative atmosphere soon gives way to a surge of energy that transforms the stage into a living landscape.
A contemporary dance ritual that reconnects us with nature and our tribal instincts.
