8th edition
August 27 – 29
San Gimignano (Siena)
Orizzonti Verticali, which contains an oxymoron that well expresses contradictions and impulses, has always been inspired by the themes of generational comparison for the transmission of experiences on an artistic level. Cultural projects in Italy, now unable to re-generate for multiple super structural reasons, have suffered a violent arrest. But this gives us a great possibility of reflection and restart, as if we were in front of an imaginary point of return – or zero point – to regain thoughts and ideas. Since the birth of the OV project, great personalities have left their “memories” – traces of their paths right in San Gimignano – linking their experience with our present to imagine a future of the theatre, the dance and the performing arts. Starting from these testimonies, Orizzonti Verticali renews its identity by relaunching the value of culture (from the Italian verb colĕre “to cultivate”, a word that expresses the care needed to obtain it) as a primary asset of collective growth.
The main theme of the new edition of OV 2020, which has been completely rethought, will be writing as the primary source of knowledge transmission, a blank page from which we can continue our path and our research.
“The book begins – with two blank pages – all books begin – with two blank pages”. (Sebastiano Vassalli)
In August the three-day festival, in addition to host events that will voluntarily have a fragmented and performative form, will welcome a collective work built piece by piece throughout the event. This work will form a large scenic space in the centre of San Gimignano in Piazza Duomo, where audiences, artists, critics and citizens will be invited to contribute by attacking pages of books. In the end, this space will be the stage for the final performance of August 29: artists, among the greatest exponents of Italian theatre, will join as an act of extreme participation in a project that, like many others in Italy, resists despite everything. Some places in the city will also host permanent installations, always inspired by the main theme of the transmission of knowledge. For this exceptional occasion, we will have, by kind concession, some images and phrases taken from limited editions of one of the greatest Italian writers of the ‘900, Sebastiano Vassalli.
Orizzonti Verticali is a project by Compagnia Giardino Chiuso and Fondazione Fabbrica Europa, with the support of Ministero per i beni e le attività culturali e per il turismo and Regione Toscana, under the aegis of Comune di San Gimignano – Assessorato alla Cultura, in collaboration with Vernice Progetti.
